Lesson XII of XIII · the TEND course
The idea behind this card — Support mobilization

A well-documented standoff isolates grievers: helpers fear intruding, so they wait for instructions; grievers can't generate instructions, so they read the silence as abandonment. Support research is blunt — specific asks mobilize help, vagueness stalls it. 'Bring dinner Thursday.' 'Text me at nine.' 'Take the school run.' The people who love you are not withholding; they are hovering, unassigned. Some help has to be asked for. Assign it.

Voices — this card, in use

Teaching vignettes: illustrative voices showing the practice applied. The living candle wall grows below.

Simone — 'converted a hoverer: bring dinner Thursday. the relief on her face — she'd been waiting for orders for a month.'

Ken — 'the anything-you-need offers were expiring unused. assigned three this week. specific asks work. the hovering were just unassigned.'

Whatever is coming up

This room is open every time — tonight, the anniversary, years from now. What's here right now?

The practice

Convert one hoverer into help today with a specific assignment: 'Bring dinner Thursday.' 'Text me at nine.' 'Take the school run Friday.' Watch relief cross their face — they've been waiting for orders.

When it's yours

If it's early daysThe 'anything you need' offers expire unused unless assigned. Assign them this week, while the willingness is warm.

If it's been a long timeLong grief's helpers forget to offer; long grievers forget they may ask. Both remain allowed. Re-open the requisition line.

If it was complicatedPeople are extra-frozen around complicated loss — no script exists. Your specific ask is the script. Hand it to them.

Sit with this

What do you actually need this week that someone in your phone could do — and who gets the assignment?

Grief literacy

Term to know: Support mobilization — specific asks activate help; vagueness stalls it. The hovering are waiting to be told how.
